The Bayberry guild was formed in 1981 in Eastham by fifteen students in a Nauset Adult Education Class. Membership Grew rapidly and in 1986 an evening division of the guild was established. The guild is dedicated to quilting and the education of members and others in the art of quilting. Today there are over 300 members in the Bayberry Quilters of Cape Cod Guild. Since its inception, the guild has grown to include quilters from all over Massachusetts as well as many other states. One of the most exciting aspects of the Bayberry guild is the wide range of talents in the group. The beginner is made to feel as comfortable as the professional.
Guild meetings are held monthly on the fourth Wednesday of each month, and on the evening before, September through May. Day meetings start at 9:00 am and evening meetings start at 7:00 pm. Our day and evening meetings have both been moved to Our Lady of the Cape Church located at 468 Stony Brook Road Brewster, MA. Meetings include lectures by nationally recognized quilt artists, member "Show and Tell," a business meeting, and guild update.
We also conduct Saturday "Quilt-Ins" on the second Saturday of each month, where members socialize and get expert help with thier projects. "Quilt-Ins" take place at the Dennis Senior Center in Dennis, except when other locations are noted in the Bayberry Program Calendar and start at 10:00 am. We have a full program of workshops taught by quilting experts which take place the week of the monthly meetings.
Other guild activities are the Quilt Bank Outreach, which meets every Monday at the Harwich Community Center to make quilts for disaster victims, seriously ill children and anyone in need. Over 200 quilts are made each year and donated to various charities, hospitals, shelters, etc. The guild hosts an annual Quilt Show on the first weekend in August at the Cape Cod Technical High School in Harwich.
